What is TENS Therapy?
TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is a non-invasive pain relief method that uses low-voltage electrical currents to relieve pain. It's widely used by physiotherapists, pain specialists, and patients at home.
How Does TENS Work?
TENS works through two main mechanisms:
1. Gate Control Theory
The electrical stimulation activates nerve fibers that "close the gate" to pain signals traveling to the brain, effectively blocking pain perception.
2. Endorphin Release
Certain TENS settings stimulate the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers.
Conditions Treated with TENS
- Chronic back pain
- Arthritis pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Sports injuries
- Post-surgical pain
- Neuropathic pain
- Menstrual pain
- Neck and shoulder tension
Using a TENS Machine
Electrode Placement
Proper electrode placement is crucial for effectiveness:
- Place electrodes on or around the painful area
- Avoid bony prominences
- Ensure good skin contact
- Keep electrodes at least 2cm apart
Settings and Duration
- Frequency: Higher (80-120Hz) for acute pain, lower (2-10Hz) for chronic pain
- Intensity: Start low and gradually increase until you feel tingling
- Duration: Typically 20-30 minutes per session
Safety Precautions
TENS should not be used:
- Over the heart or chest area
- On the front of the neck
- During pregnancy (unless advised by doctor)
- With pacemakers or other electronic implants
- On broken or irritated skin
Choosing a TENS Machine
When selecting a TENS unit, consider:
- Number of channels (2 or 4 for larger treatment areas)
- Preset programs for different conditions
- Battery type (rechargeable recommended)
- Adjustable intensity and frequency
- Display quality and ease of use
